A Cosmetic Bag Pocket Tutorial

Since I updated my Crafting Space, I decided to start working on some gifts I've been itching to create. I just couldn't wait to make this cute Susie Cosmetic Bag! It's from a pattern by Pattydoo and it's posted on Sew Modern Bags along with a video tutorial. I found the pattern while searching for a gift for my oldest daughter, a music teacher. I decided this would be the perfect gift!

I love the bag Pattydoo created, but I wanted to add a little pocket to the inside for those smaller items that tend to get lost in all the makeup one carries around.

I had a few scraps on interfacing, lining, and music material left after I cut everything out for the project. The interfacing scrap was 9" x 3", so I cut a music piece and a liner piece 4 1/2" x 3". Then I applied interfacing to those pieces of material.

Once I finished ironing the interfacing on, I thought I should make a little strap detail for any lipstick or perfume one might like to stand up in the bag.

I cut the strap piece 4 1/2" x 1 1/2", folded it in half, right sides together, lengthwise, and sewed a 1/4" seam.

Then I turned it right side out and ironed it flat.

I sewed the strap detail onto the larger music swatch and sandwiched the three pieces, right sides together, to be sewed.

I left an opening so I could turn the pocket right side out. Normally, I would leave the opening in the center of the side, not at the corner. But I was anxious to get the pocket together and assemble the rest of the bag. If you decide to add a pocket to yours, leave the opening in the center.

I turned the pocket right side out.

Then I sewed the opening together.

I centered the pocket onto the lining piece and sewed the two sides and the bottom to it.

I continued on with assembling the Cosmetic Bag, as Pattydoo directed in her video tutorial, and here is my final product.

Don't forget to assemble the pocket panel with the opening up to the zipper when you get to that step (I almost did). I love the bag and the pattern, especially the pleat detail. I'm sure my daughter will love it too! Thank you to Sew Modern Bags for posting it and to Pattydoo for creating it!
